A Day in the Life of a Physiotherapist at Gen Health

At Gen Health, every day is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in our local community. Our physiotherapists play an essential role in helping patients recover from injuries, manage pain, and improve their overall physical health.

Here’s a closer look at what a typical day for a physiotherapist looks like in our clinic.

Morning: Setting the Tone for the Day
The day begins by reviewing the patient schedule, which includes a variety of follow-up appointments, new patient assessments, and clinical Pilates classes. Our physiotherapists carefully prepare for each patient, ensuring they have reviewed their clinical notes and treatment plans, so everyone receives the best possible care.

Patient Assessments and Treatments
Each patient brings their own unique goals and needs, which makes our work dynamic and rewarding. A typical morning could involve:

  • Initial Appointments: For new patients, the physiotherapist begins with a thorough assessment, discussing their history and current concerns, and performing objective examinations to identify the issue. Together with the patient, we then create a tailored treatment plan to help reach their personal goals.
  • Treatment Sessions: For returning patients, these sessions may include hands-on techniques like joint mobilisation, soft tissue work, or guided exercise therapy in our pilates studio or gym. Using evidence-based practices, our physiotherapists focus on helping patients regain mobility, strength, and function.
  • Education and Advice: Empowering patients with knowledge is a key part of our role. We will help a patient understand their condition, ways to adhere to our recommendations and perform their rehab (whatever it entails) at home.

Morning Tea: Connecting as a Team
Mid-morning, we take a break together for tea—this is a great chance for us to connect as a team, share insights, and problem-solve patient cases. We use this time to work on clinical notes, enhance each other’s clinical reasoning skills, or collaborate with other team members to deliver holistic care. This helps keep us sharp and in tune with each other’s expertise, making sure we always provide the best care to our patients. This is also the time cake comes out if we are celebrating a team member birthday or achievement!

Afternoon: Continuing Patient Care
The afternoon continues with a steady flow of patient appointments and treatments. Some highlights of the afternoon might include:

  • Rehabilitation Programs: Our physiotherapists create personalised rehabilitation programs for patients recovering from surgery or managing chronic conditions. These programs are designed to improve strength, flexibility, and overall function, ensuring patients progress safely and effectively.
  • Sports Injury Management: We often work with athletes and active individuals. Whether it’s a weekend warrior or a professional, we develop injury management plans that help them return to their activities stronger and smarter.
  • Collaborative Care: Teamwork is at the heart of everything we do. Our physiotherapists regularly collaborate with other allied health professionals, particularly our in-house podiatrists, exercise scientists, and occupational therapists—to ensure our patients receive comprehensive and integrated care.

Afternoon Tea: Learning and Growing Together
In the afternoon, we come together again for another tea break. This is a valuable moment for further collaboration and continued learning. We might discuss complex cases or share tips that enhance our clinical approaches. It’s a supportive, open environment where we learn from each other every day, ensuring our team is always growing and providing the highest standard of care.

End of the Day: Reflecting and Planning
At the end of the day, our physiotherapists update patient notes and review treatment plans. This reflection is essential for tracking patient progress and planning for future sessions. Before wrapping up, our physios take a moment to review the next day’s schedule, ensuring they’re ready to meet the needs of each patient.

Work-Life Balance and Opening Hours
At Gen Health, we know how important work-life balance is. That’s why we’re generally open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with two evenings a week where we stay open until 7:30pm to accommodate after-hours patients. The bonus? No very early starts and no weekend work! This schedule allows our team to enjoy a balanced professional and personal life, while still providing high-quality care to our patients.
