5 Easy Foot and Leg Exercises You Can Do at Your Desk

By Kelebogile Moloisane, Podiatrist

Sitting at a desk all day can leave your feet, ankles, and legs feeling stiff, sore, and fatigued. As podiatrists, we see the effects of prolonged sitting every day, from poor circulation to tight calves and plantar fasciitis. The good news? A few simple exercises at your desk can make a big difference to your foot and lower limb health.

Here are five quick desk exercises to keep you moving throughout the workday:

1. Toe Taps

Keep your heels on the floor and lift your toes up and down for 20–30 seconds. This helps improve circulation and activate the muscles in the front of your lower legs.

2. Calf Raises

While seated, lift your heels off the ground, squeezing your calves at the top. Repeat 10–15 times to promote blood flow and reduce stiffness.

3. Ankle Circles

Lift one foot off the floor and slowly rotate your ankle clockwise, then counter-clockwise. Aim for 10 circles in each direction. This boosts mobility and can help prevent ankle stiffness.

4. Foot Doming (Short Foot Exercise)

With feet flat on the ground, gently contract the small muscles in your foot to create an arch without curling your toes. Hold for 5 seconds, repeat 10 times. Great for foot strength and arch support!

5. Seated Hamstring Stretch

Sit tall near the edge of your chair, straighten one leg with your heel on the floor and gently lean forward from the hips. Hold for 20–30 seconds and repeat on the other side. This keeps your hamstrings and calves supple.

Why It Matters

Even short bouts of movement during your workday can prevent aches, improve posture, and support overall foot health. These exercises are simple, discreet, and effective—no gym gear required.
