By Will Barber, Accredited Exercise Scientist
At Gen Health, we believe that everyone has the right to move — and to move in a way that feels good.
As an Accredited Exercise Scientist, I get to work with people of all ages and health backgrounds — from children, to athletes to older adults, to people living with chronic conditions or injuries. And I’m constantly reminded of just how incredible the human body is — not for what it looks like, but for what it does for us every single day.
This Exercise Right Month, we’re celebrating gratitude in movement — because no matter your fitness level, health condition, or stage of life, there’s something to be thankful for in the way your body moves.
What is Exercise Right Month?
Exercise Right Month is an annual campaign powered by Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) to raise awareness about the role of exercise professionals and the importance of safe, tailored movement for every body.
The goal? To remind Australians that exercise is for everyone, but not just exercise, movement!!! — and that support is available to help you move right, the safest way you can.
Movement is More Than Just Fitness
When we think of “exercise,” it’s easy to picture intense gym sessions or long runs. But movement can be as simple as stretching in the morning, walking the dog, doing housework, or dancing in the kitchen. At Gen Health, we celebrate all forms of movement — especially the ones that make you feel more connected to your body.
Even small daily movements can:
- Boost your energy and mood
- Improve joint mobility and flexibility
- Help manage or prevent chronic health conditions
- Build strength and coordination
- Support mental health and reduce stress.
Gratitude Starts with What You Can Do
Not everybody can run marathons, or wants to. Not every person wakes up pain-free, but would love to. But no matter where you’re starting from, there is always something you can do — and that’s where we start.
Gratitude in movement is about:
- Acknowledging your body’s current capacity, without judgment
- Setting the intention to turn up for yourself, and constantly improve the quality of your life, and ability to maintain independence
- Celebrating small wins — like walking further than yesterday or feeling more confident going up stairs
- Honouring rest and recovery as part of the process
- Focusing on function over aesthetics.
Whether you’re recovering from injury, managing a chronic illness, or just haven’t exercised in a while — we’ll meet you where you are and support you in moving forward.
