Why we Prioritise Professional Development at Gen Health Hamilton

In healthcare, learning never stops. New research emerges, treatment approaches evolve, and best practice is constantly improving. At Gen Health Hamilton, Professional Development (PD) is more than just a requirement. It is a core part of how we care for our community and support our team.

Across our Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Exercise Physiology and Occupational Therapy teams, we dedicate time every fortnight to learning together, sharing ideas, and staying connected to the latest evidence-based practice. Because when our clinicians continue to grow, our patients benefit too.

Building a Culture of Learning

One of the most valuable parts of these sessions is the opportunity to learn from each other. Each clinician brings different experiences, special interests, external training, and perspectives into the room. By sharing knowledge across disciplines, we strengthen our ability to provide collaborative and well-rounded care to our community.

For allied health professionals, ongoing Professional Development is a requirement of maintaining registration through Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). While completing continuing education is an important professional responsibility, at Gen Health our focus goes far beyond simply meeting registration requirements. We see Professional Development as an opportunity to grow as clinicians, collaborate as a team, and continue delivering the highest standard of care to our community.

Our PD sessions are designed to be practical, engaging, and relevant to what we are seeing in the clinic every day. Rather than learning in isolation, our team works together to discuss real clinical situations, current evidence, and emerging treatment approaches.

Professional Development – Staying Up to Date With the Latest Evidence

Healthcare is always evolving, and we believe our patients deserve care that reflects current best practice.

Our team regularly attends external courses, workshops, conferences, and advanced training programs. A key part of our PD culture is bringing that knowledge back to the wider team so everyone benefits from the learning.

Recent Professional Development topics have included:

  • Clinical use of ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injections
  • Pilates-based rehabilitation
  • Persistent pain management
  • Developing effective exercise programs
  • Running assessments and movement analysis
  • Strength and rehabilitation programming
  • Injury prevention strategies
  • Footwear and lower limb assessment
  • Mental health and functional support strategies

These sessions allow clinicians with special interest areas to share new skills, treatment approaches, and research findings with the broader team. It also helps ensure that the care delivered at Gen Health continues to reflect modern, evidence-informed practice.

As part of each team member’s employment, we also provide a dedicated Professional Development allowance, along with paid leave to support attendance at external courses, workshops, and conferences. This ensures clinicians have both the time and financial support to continue building their skills, stay up to date with the latest evidence, and bring new learning back into the clinic for the benefit of our community.

Learning Across Disciplines

One of the unique strengths of a multidisciplinary clinic is the ability to learn beyond your own profession.

A Physiotherapist may gain insights from an Occupational Therapist about supporting adolescents with day to day challenges. An Exercise Physiologist may share strength and conditioning principles that improve rehabilitation outcomes. A Podiatrist may provide education around biomechanics and running-related injuries that supports the wider clinical team.

This collaborative approach helps our clinicians think more broadly about patient care and encourages a stronger understanding of how different allied health professions work together.

Ultimately, this means better outcomes for our patients and a more connected experience within the clinic.

Supporting New Graduates and Early Career Clinicians

Starting a career in allied health can feel exciting and overwhelming all at once. At Gen Health, supporting early career clinicians is something we genuinely value.

Our New Graduate Mentoring Program & Professional Development are designed to help clinicians build confidence, clinical reasoning skills, and practical experience within a supportive environment.

This includes:

  • Structured mentoring
  • Regular clinical support
  • Goal setting and reflective practice
  • Shadowing opportunities
  • Case discussions
  • Hands-on learning
  • Guidance from experienced clinicians

We want our new graduates to feel supported while developing their own clinical style and confidence.

As part of each team member’s employment (No matter, we also provide a dedicated Professional Development allowance. This supports ongoing learning through external courses, workshops, and conferences, allowing clinicians to continue building their skills and bringing the latest evidence back into the clinic.

Journal Club: Turning Research Into Practice

Another important part of our learning culture is our Journal Club.

Each month, team members share journal articles and recent research that relate to their profession or clinical interests. These discussions help us critically analyse evidence, challenge our thinking, and explore how research can be applied in real clinical settings.

Journal Club encourages curiosity and ongoing learning while helping clinicians stay connected to emerging evidence across Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Exercise Physiology, and Occupational Therapy.

Why Professional Development Matters for Our Community

Professional Development is not just about clinicians learning new skills. It directly impacts the quality of care our community receives.

By investing time into education, mentoring, collaboration, and evidence-based practice, we can continue to provide high-quality allied health services that evolve with the latest research and clinical knowledge.

At Gen Health, we believe that strong teams create strong outcomes. Our commitment to learning helps us continue strengthening the health of our local community, together.

Looking Ahead

As healthcare continues to change, our commitment to learning remains constant. Whether it is attending external courses, mentoring new graduates, discussing journal articles, or collaborating as a multidisciplinary team, Professional Development will always be a valued part of life at Gen Health. Because great healthcare starts with clinicians who never stop learning.
