Graduating as a Physiotherapist is an exciting milestone, but it can also feel incredibly daunting. After years of lectures, placements and exams, many New Grad Physio find themselves asking the same questions:
- Will I know enough?
- What if I miss something important?
- How do I manage a full caseload?
- Can I build a career that I genuinely enjoy and sustain long-term?
At Gen Health Hamilton, we believe the first year of practice should not feel like being thrown in the deep end. It should feel like the beginning of a supported journey into becoming a confident, capable and fulfilled practitioner.
That philosophy is what shaped our 12-month New Graduate Physiotherapy Program, which we are excited to invite someone into as we open applications for our upcoming graduate positions in September.
The transition from university to New Grad Physio
University provides the foundation for a career in Physio, but confidence is built through real-world experience, mentorship and reflection. One of the biggest misconceptions new grads carry is that they are expected to know everything from day one.
“No one expects a New Grad to know everything. What matters most is curiosity, a willingness to learn and feeling supported enough to ask questions.” – Rachel, Physiotherapy Team Leader
The reality is that every experienced Physio was once a graduate navigating their first patient conversations, treatment plans and clinical decisions. The difference is often not intelligence or grades, it is the quality of the environment they enter.
“Like most New Grad’s, I started with a lot of excitement but also plenty of nerves. What made the biggest difference was knowing I didn’t have to have all the answers. I was encouraged to ask questions, reflect on my patients and learn alongside an incredibly supportive team.” – Kate Millear, Physiotherapist (Grad Year 2025)
What makes our New Graduate Program different?
Our program has been designed specifically for the transition from student to practitioner. Rather than focusing only on technical skills, we have built a program that supports the whole person.
Structured mentoring
Each graduate is supported by senior physiotherapists who provide regular mentoring, case discussion and clinical guidance. This includes:
- Weekly mentoring sessions
- Case reviews and treatment planning
- Goal setting and progress tracking
- Reflection on challenging presentations
- Support with clinical reasoning and decision-making
Having dedicated time to discuss patients, ask questions and unpack uncertainty is one of the most valuable parts of the graduate year.
Protected learning time
Learning does not stop at graduation. Graduates are provided with regular protected opportunities for professional development, including:
- In-service education sessions
- Journal clubs
- Clinical observation of senior clinicians AKA (WOW Sessions = What others work)
- Practical Skills PD
- External professional development opportunities
This allows new physio’s to continue building their knowledge without feeling that education has to happen only after hours.
A collaborative clinical environment
At Gen Health Hamilton, graduates are never expected to manage difficult situations alone.
Our Physiotherapy team works together and also closely with our Podiatry, Exercise Physiology & Occupational Therapy teams. Our Practitioner team is also supported by our awesome Admin team who help coordinate patient care.
This multidisciplinary environment means graduates are constantly exposed to different perspectives, referral pathways and treatment approaches.
“Learning doesn’t stop when university finishes. We see the first year as an extension of your education, with a whole team invested in helping you grow.” — Jessica Fishburn, Director & Pelvic Health & Pain Physiotherapist
Gradual caseload growth
One of the most common fears for new graduates is being overwhelmed by a full caseload too quickly. Our approach is intentionally gradual. Caseloads are built over time so that graduates can develop confidence, refine their assessment skills and establish effective treatment planning processes before taking on greater complexity. This creates a safer experience for both the clinician and the patient.
More than clinical skills: building a sustainable career
Being a great Physio is not just about anatomy, biomechanics and exercise prescription. It is also about communication, empathy, teamwork, resilience and maintaining your own wellbeing.
Burnout is a real concern in healthcare, particularly for clinicians who feel they must constantly prove themselves. We want our graduates to build careers they can sustain for decades, not just survive for a few years. That is why our program places strong emphasis on:
- Team connection
- Personal wellbeing
- Work-life balance
- Professional boundaries
- Time management
- Reflective practice
“We have built our graduate program around the experience we wish we had when we started our careers. Our goal is to help graduates become confident clinicians in a nurturing and supportive environment. So much of the New Graduate year is ‘learning on the job’ – so it is reassuring to have the expertise of senior practitioners to nourish this transition from student life to Allied Health professional”. — Melanie Roll, Director & Physiotherapist
The culture New grads notice first
When someone joins Gen Health Hamilton, the feedback we hear most often is about the people.
Questions are encouraged. Senior Practitioners are approachable. Team members celebrate each other’s wins and support each other through challenges.
Graduates are not isolated practitioners working behind closed doors; they are part of a connected team with a shared purpose: Together strengthening the health of our local community.
“One of the things I’ve valued most is how invested everyone has been in my development. The regular mentoring, constructive feedback and encouragement have helped me grow into a more confident and capable Practitioner.” – [Aayusha Jogi], Physiotherapist (Grad year 2026)
What does a typical week look like?
While every week is different, a Physio at Gen Health Hamilton may spend time:
- Assessing and treating musculoskeletal conditions
- Taking (or attending!) a Clinical Pilates class
- Attending a mentoring session with a senior physiotherapist
- Participating in an in-service education Professional Development Session
- Discussing a complex case with the multidisciplinary team
- Observing another clinician’s treatment approach
- Reflecting on clinical goals and professional development
This combination of patient care, education and mentorship helps accelerate growth while maintaining support.
Who thrives in our graduate program?
We are not looking for graduates who have all the answers. The people who tend to thrive are those who are:
- Curious and eager to learn
- Compassionate and patient-centred
- Reflective about their practice
- Comfortable asking for feedback
- Motivated to grow over time
- Interested in being part of a team
- Passionate about contributing to a regional community
Technical skills can be developed. Attitude, empathy and a willingness to learn are what create exceptional clinicians.
Why regional practice can be an incredible start to your career
Beginning your career in a regional setting often provides opportunities that are harder to access in larger metropolitan clinics. Physios frequently gain exposure to:
- A broader variety of presentations
- Stronger continuity of patient care
- Closer collaboration with other health professionals
- Meaningful community connection
- Earlier opportunities for responsibility and leadership
Hamilton offers the unique combination of a supportive regional community with a progressive, multidisciplinary allied health environment.
