An Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) is a university qualified allied health professional with the skills and knowledge to evaluate, design and deliver safe and effective exercise interventions for people with sub-acute, acute or chronic medical conditions, disabilities or injuries.

AEPs specialise in working with people living with a wide variety of health conditions, including cardiovascular, neurological, metabolic, musculoskeletal, respiratory and mental health conditions.

Exercise physiologists use evidence-based practice to guide and inform treatment. They stay up to date with the latest research and use this knowledge to guide individualised treatment plans.

What should I expect at an initial appointment?

An initial appointment with an AEP revolves around gathering information about you and your current state of health and wellbeing. A thorough subjective assessment is carried out to understand you and your lifestyle, gather information about past and present medical conditions, and set goals for treatment.

Objective measurements will then be taken to set baseline measurements for treatment and track progress. There are many different types of objective measurements that can be taken.

These may include:

Your exercise physiologist will determine the most relevant objective tests for you, based on your goals and current level of health and will then develop a treatment plan specific for you, which is usually delivered in a follow up session.
